Meta to cut 5% of workforce by addressing low performers, plans to backfill roles with fresh talent

"This is going to be an intense year, and I want to make sure we have the best people on our teams. I've decided to raise the bar on performance management and move out low performers faster," CEO Mark Zuckerberg said.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has announced that it will be conducting organisational restructuring, aimed at optimising talent and enhancing performance. According to a Bloomberg report, further cited by CNBC, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in an internal memo that this will involve a 5% adjustment to its workforce.

In response to queries by HRO, a representative for Meta confirmed the accuracy of the Bloomberg report, highlighting that Meta will be back filling the affected positions. No details were shared on regional impacts. 

In the memo, shared by CNBC, Zuckerberg said: "Meta is working on building some of the most important technologies of the world. AI, glasses as the next computing platform and the future of social media. This is going to be an intense year, and I want to make sure we have the best people on our teams."

He added that he has "decided to raise the bar on performance management and move out low performers faster."

On that note, Zuckerberg's memo was further cited as saying: "We won’t manage out everyone who didn’t meet expectations for the last period if we’re optimistic about their future performance, and for those we do let go, we’ll provide generous severance in line with what we provided with previous cuts.

"We’ll follow up with more guidance for managers ahead of calibrations. People who are impacted will be notified on February 10 or later for those outside the US."
