MOM responds to parliamentary query on medical insurance for older workers in Singapore

"Employers could choose to make contributions to their employees’ MediSave account, to help pay for the premiums of MediShield Life or Integrated Shield Plans," MOM said.

Singapore's Ministry of Manpower (MOM) recently responded to a written parliamentary query by Member of Parliament, Desmond Choo, on the following:

  1. Whether the ministry collects data on the current number of older employees who are not covered by any medical insurance provided by their employers; and
  2. If MOM has any plans to collaborate with insurers to provide medical insurance coverage for older workers who work past their retirement and re-employment age and if so, what the plans are.

The ministry said it does not collect data on the age of employees who are not covered by employer-provided medical insurance, adding that while employers are not required to provide medical insurance to their employees, some choose to do so as a form of employment benefits.

“Employers could choose to make contributions to their employees’ MediSave account, to help pay for the premiums of MediShield Life or Integrated Shield Plans," MOM added. This will allow employees to retain insurance coverage even when they change employers or stop working.

As the ministry shared further, all Singapore citizens and Permanent Residents, be it employed or not, are covered by MediShield Life throughout the course of their lives.
