Travellers entering Singapore from Malaysia on factory buses will soon be able to clear immigration at the land checkpoints using QR codes.
According to State Works, Transportation, Infrastructure, and Communication Committee Chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh, cited in New Straits Times, the pilot run of the QR code immigration clearance system will see immigration officers boarding the buses beginning this June.
He shared further: "The immigration officers equipped with handheld QR scanners will board the buses and clear immigration inspection using the QR code system."
Passengers will then be required to show their generated QR code to the officers on board. As further reported by New Straits Times, this method having officers check the QR codes on board was ultimately decided by the Home Ministry during the system's trial run before its implementation at land checkpoints at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex in Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) in Johor Baru, and the SecondLink Komplex Sultan Abu Bakar (KSAB) in Gelang Patah.
The "officers-on-board" method was ultimately decided by the Home Ministry during the system's trial run before its implementation at land checkpoints at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex in Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) in Johor Baru, and the SecondLink Komplex Sultan Abu Bakar (KSAB) in Gelang Patah.
It was also noted that further discussions between the ministry and the Immigration Department are underway to refine its implementation.
According to the article, the system will be rolled out in phases, with Johor being the first state in the country to implement the system at its international checkpoints, given the volume of travellers that cross there frequently.
