Putra Heights gas fire: KESUMA urges workplace safety and support for affected employees

KESUMA said it is taking immediate steps to investigate safety lapses, enforce workplace protections, and support affected workers.

A recent gas pipe fire in Putra Heights has raised concerns over workplace and community safety. In response, Malaysia’s Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA) has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring worker protection and supporting affected individuals.

Immediate action taken

Following the incident, the Occupational Safety and Health Department (JKKP) conducted an investigation under Section 15(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994, which mandates employer responsibility for workplace safety. As a precautionary measure, JKKP issued a Disruption Prohibition Instruction Letter and five Prohibition Notices on the block valves at the site. Any breach of these safety provisions could result in fines of up to RM500,000 or a maximum jail term of two years.

Support for affected workers

Beyond workplace safety, KESUMA has mobilised agencies to assist those impacted. The PERKESO Prihatin Squad was deployed to evacuation centres and hospitals across Selangor, offering support to victims suffering from trauma and injuries. SOCSO is also working to ensure eligible contributors receive benefits under its Disability Scheme. The ministry urged employees affected by the incident to check their eligibility for temporary or permanent disability benefits by contacting the SOCSO helpline at 1-300-22-8000.

Encouraging workplace flexibility

As recovery efforts continue, KESUMA has also urged employers to allow flexible work arrangements (AKF) for the affected employeesunder Section 60P of the Employment Act 1955. This may include changes in working hours, days, or even workplace location to support their return to work.

The ministry also called on private sector employers to consider providing paid compassionate leave to allow workers time to manage personal losses and recovery. Employers or employees seeking guidance on workplace rights during this period can reach out to the Peninsular Malaysia Labour Department (JTKSM) at 03-88865192.
