WFH has created a cybersecurity headache for many organisations

The COVID-19 pandemic has devastated many businesses across the globe.

The switch to remote work has also brought into play new risks for many organisations – from closing security gaps with new technology to educating WFH employees on how to avoid phishing attacks to strengthening the security protection needed to safely work remotely.

According to a just-published Cyber Readiness Report from Acronis, 80% of companies were not ready for the shift to employees remote working, with IT infrastructure suffering accordingly.

While 92% of companies revealed that they had to adapt to new technologies to enable them make the jump to remote working, including workplace collaboration tools, privacy solutions and endpoint cybersecurity.

More alarmingly, 31% of companies reported being hit by a cyber-attack – such as ransomware – while 39% of companies experienced videoconferencing attacks.

According to the report, “As a result of the pandemic lockdown, 69% of remote workers necessarily rely on apps like Zoom (and) Cisco Webex to collaborate with colleagues, communicate with partners and vendors, or to meet with customers and prospects. Cybercriminals have been taking advantage of that reliance: 39% of companies have experienced videoconferencing attacks in the past three months.”

The report surveyed more than 3400 IT managers and remote workers in 17 countries over June and July 2020.
