6 ways Malaysia's Immigration Department is looking to reform its work processes & services

This includes work cycles and strengthening its standard operating procedures.

The Immigration Department of Malaysia (JIM) has established six steps it will follow as part of efforts to reform the work process and delivery of immigration services as a whole.

Work cycle

First, JIM said it will implement the work cycle for leaders, supervisors, and officers immediately for officers who have served for more than three years. The relevant officers have been identified and the transfer instructions will be implemented in stages to ensure that daily operations at KLIA are not affected.

SOP reviews

Second, JIM will review and improve all standard operating procedures (SOPs) in the areas of entrance security control management, security stamp management and visitor inspection management. This aims to close loopholes and opportunities for officers to manipulate and take advantage of available spaces.

Further supervision

In the third step, JIM will increase supervision and monitoring. This will include including surprise inspections of group leaders and officers to ensure compliance with effective instructions which will be carried out continuously by integrity officers and supervisors. Strict action will be taken against officers who violate such instructions.

System improvement

JIM hopes to improve the system, which will enable better monitoring of transactions carried out on a daily basis in detecting suspicious transactions.

CCTV installation

For the fifth step, JIM will expedite the process of installing closed-circuit cameras (CCTV) equipped with visual and audio in strategic locations for continuous monitoring in the control room.

Inter-agency cooperation

Lastly, JIM will increase strategic cooperation with other enforcement agencies such as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, Royal Malaysian Police, Royal Malaysian Customs Department, and other agencies from time to time.

In its statement, JIM has affirmed that the Ministry of Home Affairs and JIM take this matter "very seriously" and constantly evaluate and improve the delivery system.
