Malaysia is looking to establish its Gig Economy Commission Malaysia (SEGiM) soonest possible.
Speaking at a recent national forum on the Gig Industry Framework, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi affirmed Malaysia's commitment to setting up SEGiM. To drive efforts, DPM Zahid Hamidi said he has since requested the Ministry of Human Resources (MoHR) to submit a memorandum to be presented to the Cabinet, seeking approval for the establishment of the commission.
This commission, he shared, will act as a body that functions to coordinate and overcome related issues and produce initiatives that are capable of safeguarding the welfare of consumers, traders, vendors, shippers, drivers and platform providers.
The establishment of SEGiM is expected to be announced during the presentation of Budget 2024 in October. In that vein, DPM Zahid Hamidi shared that he is also confident that the allocation for the informal worker industry, especially gig workers, will be increased from RM100mn currently to RM500mn next year.
He expressed: "These gig entrepreneurs are very close to my heart, and even during the President's Mandate speech in conjunction with the 2023 UMNO General Assembly, I mentioned establishing the Malaysian Gig Economy Commission (SEGiM)."
Held at the World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur, the national forum discussed ways to improve the national gig industry, which is believed to be capable of driving positive development for the economy and is also one of the initiatives of the Government's concern for the welfare of gig workers, especially the delivery partners in the country.
