While it is still required on public transport, it is now optional in venues such as houses of worship, but highly encouraged.

On 7 September 2022 (Wednesday), mask-wearing became optional in most indoor places in Malaysia.

In line with that, the Ministry of Health (Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia, or KKM) has shared a quick, handy guide on when/where masks are still required, and when/where they are not:

Required:

  • If you are COVID-positive. KKM reminds COVID-positive individuals to visit a COVID-19 assessment centre for assessment if needed. Otherwise, the individual must continue to undergo quarantine as stipulated in the health protocols.
  • While travelling on public transport: services such as buses, trains, taxis including e-hailing services, airplanes and buses, employee vans, and school vans.
  • While visiting health facilities such as hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, hemodialysis centres, and the equivalent.

Not required, but highly encouraged:

  • While at crowded venues, including houses of worship.
  • If you have symptoms such as fever, cough, or cold.
  • If you are a high-risk individual.
  • If you are with a high-risk individual.

Do note, however, that according to KKM, premise owners can determine whether visitors are required to wear a face mask at their venues.
