MOH on how Singapore is retaining the expertise of senior healthcare workers

Apart from job redesign and upskilling & retraining efforts, senior healthcare workers are also encouraged to partake in mentorship and education, as well as volunteer programmes.

On 4 July 2023 (Tuesday), Singapore's Ministry of Health (MOH) shared about the ongoing government measures and hopes for preserving senior healthcare workers' experience. This was in response to a Parliamentary question by Member of Parliament Dr Wan Rizal, regarding the concern of the physical toll senior healthcare workers experience, and how the government wishes to address that in order to retain them in the workforce.

As shared by the ministry, one way the expertise of senior healthcare workers is being retained is through generational learning, it was added. In particular, through mentorship and education, senior healthcare workers, who could also be seasoned healthcare professionals, are able to groom the next generation of healthcare workers.

Additionally, the ministry works with public healthcare clusters to support upskilling and re-skilling efforts, redesigning jobs so that they are less physically demanding, and reassigning senior healthcare workers to new roles where appropriate. As a standard practice, clusters will re-employ healthcare workers beyond the statutory retirement age of 63, and extend beyond if the healthcare workers are willing.

For retired workers, MOH expressed its hopes that they would consider volunteering in healthcare roles, such as through the various volunteer programmes organised by the healthcare clusters, featuring roles ranging from care-related duties in the wards to community engagement roles that are not physically demanding.

In addition, roles in the community care sector are also available, such as at nursing homes, Active Ageing Centres, or with home care services, where they can support other seniors.
