Weeroc to set up new operations facility in Selangor starting early 2025

Commenting on the semiconductor manufacturer's plans, MITI minister Zafrul Aziz said it was "an important step in strengthening Malaysia as a semiconductor design and innovation hub in Asia", alongside creating new job opportunities and strengthening local talent development.

Semiconductor manufacturer Weeroc has announced investment plans of about RM20mn to set up operations in Selangor starting early 2025.

This was reported by The Edge Malaysia, in an article shared on the Malaysian Investment Development Authority's website.

As cited, to facilitate this expansion, Weeroc has signed a letter of intent with the Selangor Information Technology & Digital Economy Corporation (Sidec), which will support the company’s operational launch in Malaysia.

Based in France, the company is a start-up founded by Dr Salleh Ahmad from Selangor, who employed about 10 engineers.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Tengku Zafrul Aziz, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, Selangor state executive councillor for investment, trade, and mobility Ng Sze Han, and CEO of Invest Selangor, Datuk Hasan Azhari Idris.

In a Facebook post following the ceremony, Minister Zafrul said the upcoming facility, slated to open in Q1 2025, comes in line with Malaysia's National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS). "This is an important step in strengthening Malaysia as a semiconductor design and innovation hub in Asia, alongside creating new job opportunities and strengthening the development of local talent," he added.

In May this year, Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim shared five targets for the NSS, including courting a minimum of RM500bn of investments in the first phase, with domestic direct investments focusing on IC design, advanced packaging and manufacturing equipment, and FDI focusing on wafer fabs and manufacturing equipment.

The plan also involves an aim to train and upskill 60,000 high-skilled Malaysian engineers.
