According to the Ministry, foreign workers required to stay in Singapore for investigations are issued Special Passes and, if eligible, may work under the Scheme.
An annual average of about 850 Special Pass holders (SPHs) have workd under Singapore's Temporary Job Scheme since 2022, according to the Ministry of Manpower's (MOM) data.
The Ministry was responding to a Parliamentary query in early January (7 January), where it was asked for the number of foreign workers who have been granted permission to work under this scheme while under investigation by the authorities, and the main reasons for any unsuccessful applications.
As highlighted by the Ministry, foreign workers who are required to remain in Singapore to assist with any ongoing investigations will be issued a Special Pass by the respective law enforcement agency. These SPHs are then generally allowed to work under the TJS, unless concerns about public safety or interference with investigations arise.
MOM added that there is no need for SPHs to apply to participate in the JTS; instead, they will be informed of their eligibility. If they choose to work, potential employers can apply for a TJS work permit through MOM.
On the other hand, if they are able to support themselves, these pass holders may choose not to work under the JTS.
For SPHs who opt not to seek employment or face issues with upkeep, support is available from MOM.
