The Privacy Commissioner welcomes the platform’s decision.
The recent privacy policy updates of LinkedIn, which allow the employment-oriented social media platform to use by default the personal data and content created by its users on the platform to train its generative AI models for content creation, have caught the attention of Hong Kong's Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD).
Voicing its concerns of users’ data protection and the rightness of reflection of users’ choices, the PCPD said it wrote to LinkedIn to enquire into the matter on 3 October 2024.
According to the PCPD, LinkedIn replied yesterday (14 October 2024), confirming that it has paused any use of Hong Kong users’ personal data for such purposes as of 11 October 2024.
Ada Chung Lai-ling, the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, welcomes LinkedIn’s decision, adding that the PCPD will continue to follow up and monitor the situation to ensure that the personal data privacy of Hong Kong users is safeguarded.
